The organization anticipates 20,000 people will take the Plunge at more than 20 events across the state

Minneapolis, MN – Jan 9, 2024 – Get ready to take the Plunge for a great cause! Special Olympics Minnesota is thrilled to announce that registration for the 2024 Polar Plunge is officially open. This annual event, known for its adrenaline-pumping experience, invites participants to jump into icy waters to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics athletes across the state.

The 2024 Polar Plunge aspires to raise $5 million for Special Olympics Minnesota in 2024. There are more than 20 Polar Plunge events across the state and while the weather has been a little warmer than usual, we won’t let a little thaw stop us! No matter the ice conditions, we’re committed to hosting a fun and safe event.

The Polar Plunge is a signature fundraising event organized by Special Olympics Minnesota and the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Minnesota, dedicated to creating a more inclusive world for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Participants, known as “Plungers,” are encouraged to brave the cold waters as a symbol of solidarity with Special Olympics athletes.

Key event highlights

  1. Chilly challenge: Plungers will experience the thrill of a lifetime as they leap into icy waters, showcasing their commitment to Special Olympics Minnesota’s mission of inclusion.
  2. Fundraising for impact: Participants are required to fundraise at least $75 leading up to the event, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Minnesota. Fundraising incentives, including prizes and recognition, are available to motivate Plungers to make a difference.
  3. Spectator-friendly: The Polar Plunge isn’t just for brave souls taking the plunge; it’s a family-friendly event for spectators and supporters to enjoy.

The Polar Plunge is a series of events where people jump into a frozen lake to support Special Olympics Minnesota. The first Polar Plunge took place at Como Lake in St. Paul in 1998. Since then, the Plunge has expanded to over 20 locations across Minnesota.
