Effective date: Dec. 8, 2021

Thank you for reviewing our Privacy Policy. We recognize that visitors to our sites may be concerned about the information they provide to us and how we treat that information. This policy addresses those concerns.

The websites at specialolympicsminnesota.org and plungemn.org (the “Sites”) are owned and operated by Special Olympics Minnesota (“SOMN,” “we,” “our,” “us”) subject to the terms of this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Use. By accessing and using the Sites, you consent to the collection, use, and storage of your information by us in the manner described. We reserve the right to change and update this Privacy Policy at any time, and such updated versions will be posted on the Sites. You should check for updates frequently. By continuing to use the Sites after this Privacy Policy is updated, you consent to any such updated version. If you do not agree with these terms, you may not use the Sites.

Information We Collect

We collect personally identifiable information only during registration processes, including but not limited to names, mailing addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers (collectively, “Registration Information”). If you register for one of our events you may also be asked to provide additional Registration Information, such as your date of birth, or other personal information including (but not limited to) gender, t-shirt size and emergency contact information. This Registration Information is voluntarily submitted and is not required of general website visitors. Registration Information is used to fulfill your specific request, to contact you about our on-going work, to analyze our audience, and to provide you with information on volunteer opportunities or other programs or services that may be of interest, unless you give us permission to use it in another manner, for example to add you to one of our mailing lists. You may opt out of general marketing emails at any time.

Financial Information

When you choose to donate online through specialolympicsminnesota.org, you are redirected to a website that is not owned by us, but by Special Olympics International. The collection of any information through that website is governed by the privacy policy posted at that website.

We only collect credit card information from you on plungemn.org when you register for an event or make a donation to support your participation or the participation of others.  We care about the safety of your credit card transactions: secure server technology is used throughout the online transaction process. We will have to share your credit card and other information with our vendors and credit card companies to process billing. Contributions may also be made by calling 800.783.7732.

We do not keep credit card numbers, expiration dates or security codes. That information is passed to our online credit card processing company, before being deleted from our system. Pages on our Sites that accept credit card information are also protected by a security certificate issued by our IT security vendor, which encrypts sensitive information being sent over the Internet.

Non-Personal Information

The Sites collect certain standard internet log information that you do not visibly enter, such as your IP address, browser type, click stream data, and HTTP protocol elements.  In addition, in order to manage and improve our Sites, we or our service providers may use cookies (small packets of information that are stored by your web browser) or web beacons (electronic images that allow us to count visitors who have accessed a webpage), such as the Meta (Facebook) pixel.

Our Sites use cookies to “remember” visitors who have logged into their accounts. A “cookie” is a small piece of data that is sent to your browser from SOMN’s web server and is stored on your computer’s hard drive. Cookies are used to collect non-identifying information about the user, such as web surfing behavior or user preferences for a specific website. SOMN uses two different types of cookies: session-based and persistent cookies. Session-based cookies expire at the end of a browser session, so once you close your browser the cookie simply terminates. Persistent cookies remain on your computer until you remove them and are used to provide internal website analytics. You can manually delete, block, or disable all cookies, within your browser privacy settings or options. Since each browser is a little different, look at your browser’s Help menu to learn the correct way to modify your cookies. This may impact your user experience and parts of the Sites may not work for you; however, you will be able to submit information.

You cannot remove or block web beacons as they form part of the content of the web pages. These tools do not identify you personally and allow us to track and analyze aggregated usage data about our Sites and their use. However, because they work in conjunction with cookies, turning off cookies will prevent web beacons from tracking your user activity on our Sites.  The beacon can still account for an anonymous visit, but your unique information will not be recorded. The Sites do not monitor for or behave differently if your computer transmits a “do not track” or similar beacon or message.

We will use any information made available to us through these technologies only for the purposes described in this privacy policy or that are otherwise made clear to you on the relevant Site. We do not control and are not responsible for, other uses of your personal information by your third-party social media providers. We recommend that you review their privacy notices to understand how they collet, use, and share your personal information, and how you can set your privacy preference on their sites and applications.

Sharing Your Information

We may disclose your information to third party vendors engaged by SOMN to help manage our Sites or to promote our events or fundraising efforts to others. For example, your contact information may be passed to Meta (Facebook) in order for us to build custom or lookalike audiences within Meta’s ad manager platform, or to our online credit card processing company in order to facilitate payments. We may also share your information with other Special Olympics programs so that we may provide any requested services or information at your local level. In specific circumstances, we may share donor information as further explained in our Donor Privacy Policy (PDF).

In certain extreme cases, we may share information with government agencies or other companies assisting us in fraud prevention or investigation or to comply with any legal obligation, to enforce or apply our Terms of Use or to protect our rights of those of other parties. In addition, we may need to, and we reserve the right to, disclose or transfer any information to our affiliates or in connection with a change of control transaction.

All non-personal information collected through the Sites may be used and shared by us without any restriction.

A Note to Parents

The Sites are not designed for or directed at children 13 years of age or younger. However, we may collect and maintain information about users under this age with parent or guardian consent if such individuals register for one of our events. We allow users of any age to make their name and fundraising information publicly available through the Site in connection with fundraising events. Parents may request to review or have deleted any information collected from their children using the contact information below.
