Hello Summer Sports Counselors!

This year we’ve partnered with True Friends to offer a bigger, better, more diverse camp! We’re thrilled to announce that camp will be held Tuesday, June 7 through Friday, June 10 at Camp Courage Maple Lake, MN. We’re so excited to have True Friends, a leader in adaptive camping for many years, as a partner, and I know you’ll enjoy your experience with them.

How will this change affect camp? True Friends will take over the registration, communication of camp details, staffing, and hosting the camp itself. However, Special Olympics Minnesota will be the theme of camp, and we’ll recruit 30 volunteers to help with True Friends counselors. We’ll also have sports specialists and SOMN staff available to help athletes train in various Special Olympics sports that we know you love! These changes will enhance the camp experience for our Special Olympics athletes. Having camp hosted by professional camp staff will provide a safer environment for all involved, and we can add fun activities like campfires, hikes and a family lunch on the final day!

Our volunteer counselors will be partnered with a True Friends staff member. This will give our volunteers more support from knowledgeable staff. The structure of the camp will be very similar to previous years with a few additions and changes that will be better for both our volunteers and our campers! If you have specific questions about these changes or are wondering if you should continue to volunteer, you can contact Jennifer Hansen at jennifer.hansen@somn.org.

If you’re interested in volunteering, you can register through the True Friends website. When applying, indicate in the “additional comments” box that you’d like to volunteer for the “Special Olympics Camp.” Your application and training will be processed by True Friends’ Volunteer Services, and most of it will be completed ahead of time.

If you need assistance with your volunteer application, you can contact Conor S. McGrath, Director of Volunteer Services for True Friends, at conorm@truefriends.org or 952.852.0113.

Special Olympics Minnesota has enjoyed hosting camp for the past nine years, and we’re excited about this transition. It has been a wonderful experience for our staff to have time each summer with the athletes. With True Friends as a partner, we’ll be able to have even more fun with everyone! And just in case anyone’s wondering: Yes, we’ll still have our dance!

Again, all questions regarding volunteer applications, forms and training should be directed to True Friends as listed above.

See you in June!
