Mental and physical health are an important part of the Special Olympics mission. We took some time to catch up with Special Olympics Minnesota President & CEO, Dave Dorn, to learn more about how he takes care of his body and mind. Read on to learn more about Dave, and hopefully you’ll pick up some health tips along the way!
What is your favorite way to stay active?
I love doing anything outdoors! Living in Minnesota, the opportunities for outdoor activities is nearly endless. But if I can’t get outside, I like going to the gym to get at least 60 minutes of exercise each day.
What’s your favorite healthy snack?
I probably can’t say ice cream…but I love fresh fruit! Especially apples and bananas. I also love a good protein shake with a lot of greens, and I always keep a bag of almonds in my car as an emergency snack. Nuts are delicious and so good for heart health too!
What is one way you take care of your mental health?
If I’m feeling stressed out, my first go-to is to go for a run or get to the gym. Working out is a really great way to get out any frustrations and it helps me think clearly! Also, reading is a great distraction and takes my mind to a calmer place. If I need to wind down later in the day, I always have an easy read on hand.
In addition to those things, I try to get out of the house to spend time with family and friends as much as possible. Social interaction gives me the positive energy I often times need!
What is something you’re looking forward to this year?
2023 is Special Olympics Minnesota’s 50th anniversary, and I’m looking forward to celebrating the milestone all year long! I’m honored to be a part of such an amazing community of athletes, Unified partners, coaches, volunteers and fans, and I can’t wait for the next 50 years!
Any advice for Special Olympics Minnesota athletes looking to improve their physical or mental health?
It can be hard work to improve your health, but here are three pieces of advice that I go back to all the time:
- Get a good night’s sleep. Try to keep your phone and other electronics out of the room. (It’s hard, I know!)
- Do your best to get at least 60 minutes of exercise most days of the week. That could be anything you enjoy! Go for a walk, take a group fitness class, explore nature on a hike…anything that gets you up and moving.
- Reach out to one or two people every day, just to say hello and see how they are doing. Create a regular rotation of friends and family to check in with. Not only will it make a big difference in your day, but it’ll brighten the day of the people you connect with!
Remember, mental and social health are just as important as taking care of yourself physically. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others, and please take advantage of our Special Olympics Strong Minds resources!
