Mental and physical health are an important part of the Special Olympics mission. We took some time to catch up with Special Olympics Minnesota Health Programs Coordinator, Jack Dobbs, to learn how he takes care of his body and mind. Read on to learn more about Jack!
What is your favorite way to stay active?
Swimming! Growing up I was a competitive swimmer. I still try to get in the water as much as possible, whether it’s in a pool or at the lake. You might even catch me at an open water swim event in the summer.
What’s your favorite healthy snack?
I love mixing some Greek yogurt with a scoop of protein powder and some berries. It’s great for protein intake and sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.
I can’t wait to try this recipe for Whipped Greek Yogurt with Protein Powder!
What is one way you take care of your mental health?
Taking care of my mental health goes hand-in-hand with staying active. I would have to say swimming for this one as well! If I am in a funk or struggling mentally, a good swim makes all the difference.
What is your favorite part about Special Olympics Minnesota’s health programming?
My favorite part is seeing the positive change that’s happening through our health programs every day. Before working here, I didn’t really know about the health disparities that people with intellectual disabilities face. It’s really inspiring and exciting to see more and more people become aware of that, and I’m glad I can be a part of creating a better future for our athletes and the community as a whole.
What is the best part of your job as a Health Programs Manager?
The best part of my job is just being so heavily involved in our programs and seeing them grow.
I love running our fitness programs, including the 2024 Spring Fit 5 Challenge! It’s really fun seeing athletes get into it and seeing progress pictures from their fitness journeys.
What is something you’re looking forward to this year?
I’m really looking forward to attending the 2024 Summer Games in Lakeville and in Stillwater. This will be my first Summer Games! I’ve heard so much about the event, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone compete.
We’re excited to be offering Healthy Athletes screenings both weekends this year! Check out the “Health & Wellness” section on somn.org/summer for more information.
Any advice for Special Olympics Minnesota athletes looking to improve their physical or mental health?
Even the smallest changes make the biggest difference. Whether it’s drinking water instead of pop at mealtime, choosing fruit over a piece of candy or going for a walk instead of watching TV when there’s nice weather, the little things add up! These small changes can lead to huge physical and mental improvements.
