Games & Competitions

Special Olympics Minnesota offers 17 Olympic-type sports for athletes of all abilities who are ages eight or older . These sports are divided into sports seasons and athletes compete in a variety of sports at the area, regional and state levels during each season. Special Olympics also provides athletes the opportunity to compete at a national and world level. All competitions are conducted according to the official Special Olympics Rules.

Area Competitions

Area competitions are local events held within each area. Athletes must compete in an area competition in order to qualify for a state competition.

State Competitions

There are seven state competitions held annually. Athletes must qualify at an area competition in order to compete at state.

Regional Games

Regional Games are offered for basketball and softball. The games allow athletes an additional opportunity to compete in their sport.

USA Games

USA Games are held every four years. Each United States program sends a delegation to represent their state.

World Games

World Games are held every two years and alternate between Summer and Winter Games. Athletes from the United States programs unite as one delegation to form Team USA.
