Athlete Input Council
October 14, 2020 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
After years of struggling with my own weight, I was looking to find ways that other athletes or people with intellectual disabilities might be handling this or managing this or having success. Felt like whenever I tried things like Weight Watchers or other programs, they didn’t have the tools to help me be successful in my own way, which might look different from others.
Overall, persons with intellectual disabilities are more likely to be obese, and less likely to receive proper screening for obesity related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Research shows that physicians are less likely to discuss these issues with people with intellectual disabilities as well.
What I am hoping to do is introduce some legislation that will help provide training and tools for both people with intellectual disabilities and the physicians and health community that support them. That’s where you come in! I am seeking feedback from community groups, like Special Olympics athletes, to get a better understanding of what is currently happening so we can work to make things better. Please review the questions below and be prepared to discuss these questions and any share any other experiences you may have had with your healthcare too.
