Poly hockey is adapted from the game of ice hockey and played indoors on a gymnasium floor.
The teams are composed of six players, including a goalie. The athletes use plastic sticks and soft plastic pucks. A poly hockey game consists of three 9-minute periods.
As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level and age (athletes are not grouped by gender as there are typically not any teams comprised strictly of male or female athletes). Poly hockey tournaments are offered at the area level and at Winter Games.
- All teams MUST submit assessment scores for each athlete and a Team Information sheet for each team. Registrations without these scores and evaluations will not be accepted.
- The roster size is 6 minimum and 16 maximum. Rosters provided at the competition will be checked against those provided during registration.
- Coaches are reminded that proper dress is required. Athletes will not be allowed to wear jewelry or hats during competitions. Athletes that don’t have the proper equipment will not be allowed to participate.
- Please see the Special Olympics Minnesota poly hockey handbook (PDF) for more rules and guidelines.
