Athlete
A registered participant with Special Olympics who is at least eight years of age and has an intellectual disability

Delegation
Term often used to refer to a Special Olympics team. However, a delegation may consist of multiple “teams” within a given sport (e.g., the Western Wings delegation may have four basketball teams).

Head of delegation
Lead volunteer who manages a delegation

Level 1 coach
Volunteer who has gone through basic certification procedures (volunteer application; background check; General Session, Protective Behaviors and Concussion training, all available online)

Level 2 coach
Volunteer who has advanced their training and taken a leadership role in coaching a team. These coaches must take a sport-specific training online or an in-person class.
