Competitions Overview

Special Olympics is the world's largest program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 2.5 million athletes around the world benefit from participation in Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Minnesota offers training and competition in 17 Olympic-type sports for athletes eight years or older. No matter what ability level, an athlete can benefit from Special Olympics. And no matter what an athlete's interests, there is a opportunity to be found. Special Olympics competitions provide a meaningful opportunity for athletes of all ability levels to test their sports skills and measure progress throughout a training period. They also provide an environment in which athletes are challenged, and their achievements are celebrated.

Adherence to Special Olympics sports rules is critical at all levels of competition, so the performance of each athlete is compared to the same standards. Through a process called “divisioning,” athletes at all levels of participation are afforded fair competition.
